Server failure, downtime and rollback
On 2023-01-31 the third-party server hosting our website suffered a storage system failure, resulting in total data loss. All on-site backups were lost, and the already infrequent manual off-site backups were not being done due to a scheduled service migration in early february. The failure happened literally 3 days before the move, after over 8 years of uninterrupted service. The timing is unbelievable.
The latest available data, from 2021-12-23, has now been restored. Unfortunately this means a rollback of around 13 months. Player score will not be up to date and decks will have to be re-done. Players who started in 2022 will have to recreate their accounts. Some discussions and contributions in 2022 were also lost. A shallow snapshot of the site from late 2022 is available on the Wayback Machine.
Furthermore, the new web hosting originally chosen for the migration was discovered to be unsuitable, and so far no replacement has been found. The site is thus running from an improvised non-permanent location. Suggestions for a (preferably) free service are welcome.

Incursion in the South
After several strange events reported in the South the ambassadors representing human, elven and dwarven factions gathered on a secret council to share information, determine the cause and come up with possible solutions. All confirmed that they suddenly lost contact with their remote outposts and trading posts. With this little information available a solution was proposed - to create a scouting party that would contain members of all factions. However, neither faction wanted to sacrifice own assets for the sake of others and thus an agreement wasn't achieved. Instead, they decided to handle this unknown threat on their own by strengthening their southern borders.

Shattered alliance
The conflict between elven lord and Le Marquis de Vrille spanned for many decades. Elven magic and marksmanship combined with dwarven resources and crafting proved to be an equal adversary even for powerful beings such as Marquis himself. So far, the Alliance held off any invaders who would dare to cross their borders. Alas, Marquis was able to find a weakness - the dwarven greed. Grofgul the advisor to the Mountain king himself agreed to sabotage the Alliance in exchange for access to rare crystal mines in Marquis' possession.
Grofgul gained support of multiple houses who preferred rune magic over the use of technology which was preferred by the Mountain king and his supporters. With support and resources of the houses, Grofgul started campaign of misinformation, sabotage and propaganda within the Alliance and soon he would achieve his goal. Alliance leaders unsuspecting of a treachery this high were powerless to put an end to the internal conflicts, thus the Alliance was shattered into two separate factions.
Elven tribes and ancient forest creatures kept the old name - the Alliance in hopes that they could keep their homeland unchanged. Grofgul and his followers used the weakened state of their now independent faction and convinced the Mountain king to restore the common usage of rune magic and transfer some of his political power to the high rune priests. The most powerful rune priests formed the Runic circle a new ruling power in the dwarven lands, thus forming a new faction - the Runic league.

Mega update

- instead of scrolling the card pool by using the horizontal scroll bar, you can use mouse cursor. When you move the mouse cursor from within the card pool through its left or right border outward, the card pool will scroll in that direction by 3/4 of it's current width.

- Opera has best animation performance, but unfortunately is suffering from a scroll bar reset bug (scroll bar position is reset each time a card is added or removed from the deck). This bug is currently fixed by reseting the scroll bar to previous position.
- Firefox has the lowest animation performance, because of support of unrelated CSS3 technology. Since CSS3 is not standardized nor optimized yet, it significantly lowers performance. However, with newer versions of Firefox the performance will get better.
- Chrome has good performance, but for some reason the animation is not completely smooth - it sometimes "blinks"
- Firefox is recommened as the best browser for the new deck editor engine

New layout
Layout has been improved significantly:
- new improved layout with better look (color combinations, more readable texts...)
- user-configurable features
- fixed many minor display issues
In the settings section you can choose from 7 skins and 30 background images (which are displayed in-game only). For conservative users we prepared a skin (old theme (dark)) which is very similiar to old layout. Old background image (arcomage) is also available. More skins can be added, so feel free to submit any suggestion regarding color combinations, background images etc...
To speed up the process of selecting the in-game background image, open two tabs (or windows) simultaneously - one for in-game view and one for settings section. After you choose a new background image you just hit F5 to see how it looks as a in-game background.
Since new layout uses some of the experimental CSS3 features (round corners, text shadows and background image resizing), which are not yet included in W3C standards, the layout varies, depending on the browser you use. Here is the browser comparison:
- Firefox - supports all used CSS3 features except background image resizing, so the in-game background image is not resized to cover the entire screen (this effects higher resolutions)
- Opera does not support round corners and has very limited text shadow support
- Chrome does not support round corners and has medium text shadow support
Developers of Firefox, Opera and Chrome are currently working on improving the CSS3 support, so in later versions we can expect all of these features to have full support. Microsoft on the other hand clearly stated that they will not respect the upcoming CSS3 standard and their Internet Explorer 7 or 8 will not support such features. However, even without these features, the layout will be viewable, but not as good as it could be.
Refresh your browser's cache (hit F5) to apply the latest page layout changes. Please report any problems with the new layout, but make sure that before the report, you update your browser to it's latest version.

Summer update
Summer update is finally here! Check out new features:
- Forum and Concepts menubar notification can now be turned off (in the settings section)

- Want to save deck slots? Do you have some decks that you don't need at the moment, but don't want to delete them? The deck section now offers to export decks into data files and store them on your computer. New features
Following features and changes were implemented:
- Card database has been migrated from MySQL database to XML database. You should see no difference in apperance or card effects, but if you happen to notice anything strange (this also includes performace changes) please let us know.
- We added card design section - "Concepts". This section should be used for card suggestions. Instead of a plain text form in the forum, here you can create cards in a structered way. Also you can filter and sort the card list, so it's much easier to handle many cards. See game manual for more info.
- Players can now write an in-game note for themselves (there is a [Note] button next to the deck view button). You can use this to write down important information about the current game. The [Note] button is highlighted when there is some note stored, so you don't have to check the note every time you enter a game.
- Player who doesn't go first at the start of the game receives a small starting bonus - one additional stock (one from each resource).

Easter update
This update contains many feature and game system changes. Please be sure to carefully read the changelist and refresh your browser cache (hit F5) to display new layout changes properly.
Site-related changes:
- MArcomage's presentation layer has been finally migrated into XSLT. It may not look like it, but it's a whole new displaying engine, so be sure to report any abnormal behaviour.
- Avatar display settings merged into one setting
- Fixed a bug when some players couldn't upload avatar
- Removed setting "show dead players". This option is now available in the player filter options
- Liechtenstein country name corrected
- Filters in messages section can now be combined
- Online notification added to challenges section. Player's name is highlighted in lime color, when he's online
- Mass delete added to messages section. Messages can now be deleted in groups
- Messages are now segmented into pages. Added page navigation bar

Game-related changes:
- Battle reports system corrected. Now it sends game outcome for any type of victory.
- System messages (battle and challenge reports) can now be disabled in the settings section. They are disabled by default.
- Support filter added to deck section (see Game manual for more details)
- Added new options to advanced filter
- "Production" - it selects cards that boosts production
- "Discard" it selects cards that have something to do with discarding cards
- Rounding system unified - all decimal numbers are now rounded standard fashion way
- It is now impossible to draw a rare card (by normal drawing) after Quick or Swift card is played
- Danai present no longer gives empty slots to opponent's hand
- Witcher's effect corrected. No longer does bonus damage to his owner
- Heresy now picks cards for replacement at random, instead of leftmost cards
- Banish and Skirmisher keyword effect reworked. A played card can only discard cards with same or lower rarities (cards that cannot be discarded are not considered as targets for discard), but cards with highest discardable rarity are preferably selected for discard.
- Fixed some occasional card effect bugs
- Some card pictures have been refined (thanks to X-Factor)
- Improved card texts of some cards
- New keyword - Enduring - when card has this keyword, it also has a number next to this keyword. When such card is played and the last card played was same as this one, opponent will suffer additional damage equal to number next to Enduring
- Flare attack doesn't discard rare cards, unless the played card is a rare card
- Burning side-effect no longer discards Burning cards (they are not considered as targets for discard)
- Production system refined. Now cards that give production bonus to only one facility can be combined with keyword side-effect production bonus in a correct way (2 x 2 = 4, not 3)
- Round/turn system reworked to be more consistent. See Game manual for more info
- Keyword side-effect system reworked to new token system (see full description in Game manual). Why is the new system better?
- instead of random chance, you collect tokens. When you have 100 tokens a side-effect is triggered and counter is reset to 0. Transformation from old system to new one is straightforward
- random chance factor is eliminated from side-effects
- player can choose which side-effects he wants, thus removing unwanted side-effects (Titan for example)
- player can now combine side-effects with card effects not by chance, but at will
- new system is more transparent now - token accumulation and triggering of a side-effects is now clearly visible
- player can prepare for the side-effect of his opponent
- Undead side-effect reworked, now it upgrades the rarity of Undead cards (see Game manual for more details)
- Holy side-effect modified, instead of discarding cards, it replaces them with Purified ashes card
- See new balance changes in the modified cards section

New features
Here is the list of all new features and changes:
- Advanced card filter added - this filter is based on card effects (implementation done by MaskedHalfling)
- Novels menu layout optimized a bit
- Page selector in novels section now displays information about part headings, so you can easily see where each part begins
- New favicon picture added (contest winner: X-Factor)
- Added stamp pictures to private messages (contest winners: X-Factor and Dindon)
- Refined some card pictures (thanks to X-Factor)
- Implemented new post highlighting mechanism in forum section. It works like this:
- New posts are those that were created between time of your last action (before the last login) and last login
- Such posts have their post date highlighted with yellow color
- Threads that contain some new posts have their shortcut button to the last posts marked with red color
- If there are some new posts, an icon indicating this fact (a book) is displayed near forum button in the menubar
- New posts are unmarked only after you logout
- To use this system properly, be sure to logout every time you finish your stay at our site
- Banned users are not allowed to login anymore (they were allowed to login before, but couldn't do nor see anything)
- Challenging system was reworked to more message-based design:
- You can now sent some textual information with the challenge
- Also the date when challenge was sent is now available
- Challenges subsection now contains a tool that allows you to easily manage all received and sent challenges
- Added a challenge notification via system messages when challenge is accepted or rejected
- Added a shortcut button to opponent's details in the game section
- Battle report messages added - both players are informed about outcome of the game, when it is finished

New changes
We made several new modifications:
- Tower and wall layout in game section redesigned (thanks to X-Factor), also we added an animated flag to indicate tower victory, but right now only Firefox 3.x and Opera 9.52 support this animated png. Please refresh your browser cache (use F5).
- Cards in the deck and game section are now aligned to the top
- Production mechanism corrected. Mysterious production bug fixed and production arithmetic works like normal numbers multiplication (Production X2 * Production X2 = Production X4 instead of Production X3). Please note that production multiplying is available only within one turn - one card played (one round can contain more turns). So right now, only card, that can take this change to its advantage, is the "Enchantress" - it can cause Production X4
- Many other minor bug fixes and database/application optimizations

New features and modifications
We added some new features and modified few existing ones. List of all changes are listed below:
- "No keywords" - a new option in keyword filter in the deck section, which selects cards with no keywords
- Players can now see the deck they are currently playing with in the game section (via "Deck" button)
- 3 starter decks added for newly registered players
- Card text layout improved a bit (text has a small distance from the borders)
- Game limits are now applied before the production, thus making cards, that pays part of the cost after the effect, more powerful
- Players section improved - added player filter and ordering buttons to sort the players list by the selected column, also new column added - information about how many free game slots players have at the moment
- Filters that are currently in use are highlighted
- Buttons positions corrected - they should now stay in the middle of a line
- More card images refined or replaced (Thanks to X-Factor again)
- Birthdate type changed to proper date
- Moved to XHTML 1.0 Strict - we are now XHTML 1.0 Strict valid
- CSS code heavily optimized and restructed, also layout improved a bit (new button borders, corrected some flaws)
- We are now CSS 2.1 valid
- Internet Explorer support abandoned in favor of Chrome a new free browser from Google. This new browser should be built according to W3C standards and it's simple and very easy to use. We recommend it for usage on our site (we will optimize it for Chrome and support it)

Because several minor bugs and imbalances appeared after the last update, some fixes were necessary. Changes are listed below:

Forum - it's about time!
We are proud to present our brand new MArcomage discussion forum. Please use English only and behave - the forum is currently moderated by admins (Mojko and theultramage). The FAQ and manual will be updated in the part 3 of this update, so if you have any questions regarding forum (or any other), don't hesitate to ask the admins (via private messages or e-mail).
There are some other features in this update:
- Private message length raised to 1000 characters.
- If the message you are trying to send is too long, the system informs you - it will no longer truncate the message.
- Novels updated - Part V of Chapter 3: Ron, Book 1: Shattered Lives added.
The forum provides basic functionality and lacks some features other forums have. These features are planned to be added later, like smilies (also for chat) or hyperlinks (in forum posts and message texts). Our forum will evolve in time. Next and last part of this update - part 3 will contain new cards, balance changes and some minor featuers.

Update, part 1
Because of the vast number of changes planned in this update, we decided to split it into parts. Balance changes and new cards will be in the last part of this update. In the first part the following changes were implemented.
- Code restructualization - this is the main change of this part. It was necessary to allow other features, such as new challenges indication, to be implemented
- New backgrounds for login screen and novels should provide more comfortable enviroment for reading
- Upper menu bar was redesigned to separate refresh and logout button. Also Firefox should now display it correctly in most resolutions
- We now indicate in the upper menu if player has some unanswered challenges or some games where it's the logged in player's turn
- New card appearance added (now set as default). User can switch between card looks in settings section
- Fixed the situation where a player refuses to play in a started game. He/she now has 3 weeks to play a card, otherwise the opponent will be declared the winner.
- Challenging moved to player's details section. It can also be accessed trough the challenge button in the players list.
- The player age calculation is now done with day precision
- If a player leaves a game, the message "player has left the game" will be automatically added to chat to inform the opponent.
- Buttons reset deck and randomize deck now ask for confirmation.
- It is now impossible to draw the same card that was just discarded (when using the 'discard' button)

Update is here (for real this time!)
Many exciting changes and new features were added in this update. There are really lots of new options what to do.
- New section - settings. Players can now configure their profile and also game layout
- Write your personal info
- Select your country
- Upload your avatar
- Select where to display avatar
- Select card and game layout
- Select your timezone and chatmessages will display correct time
- Set message order in the chatbox
- New section - novels. Fantasy novels will be published in this section once a week
- View other user's profile - now avialable in the players section
- Hall of fame - names of people who help this site will gain an honorbale place in this section
- Phrases "Stays on hand" and "Play again" replaced by keywords Durable and Quick or Swift. Please see the game manual for more info
- Game manual updated with more detailed description of card terminology
- Default page remains "Main page" when not logged in, but after login default page is set to "Latest news"
- Many other minor changes and bugfixes...

Update announced!
We are preparing an update, so everyone who has suggestions for new cards or balance changes, please send it to Mojko.
In upcoming update these features will be added:
- Settings section, where you will be able to configure your user profile (user information, avatar...) and the game itself (time zone, layout settings ...)
- Novels section, where we will be publishing a fantasy novel written by our external associate. We will add a bit of a novel once a week or so.

database fixes
Multiple occurences of deck/game data corruption were discovered yesterday. These consisted of things like
- missing a card from a deck even though it showed as completed
- able to start a game with a partially-finished deck
- drawing an 'Empty' card at random situations
All of these were hopefully fixed by today's automatic database cleanup. If you encounter any more odd behavior like this, report it to a member of the dev team please.

Update
In this update following changes were applied:
- Page source code optimized, now uses less bandwidth, also is now optimized for multiple resolutions and multiple browsers
- All players now get 8 available decks instead of 5
- Completely new deck editor layout and also some interesting new features in the deck section
- Deck list reworked, now highlights ready decks with limegreen color
- Also games list reworked, now highlights games, where it is your turn and indicates if opponent is on-line
- In-game games list and quick game switching added. You can now switch between games without going to the games list.
- Card effect visualised. You can now see what the effect of recently played card changed. Highlighted are changes to game attributes (Resources, Facilities, Tower and Wall).
- Cards that were discarded by effect of some other card are now recorded. For example you see what card was discarded from your hand, when opponent played Word of power.
- Flood protection applied to all forms of card drawing
- New games will always start with no rare card in either player's hand
- The player to take the first turn will now be chosen randomly
- Many minor changes like better user interface layout, better screen space usage ... etc.
- To help users solve their problems we added new subsection of webpage - F.A.Q.
- Game maual has been updated and reworked for even better understanding of the game. Please check the manual for more information about recently added features
- We no longer support archaic/unsupported browsers. Please move to W3C standards compatible browser (Firefox or Opera).

new layout and features
Since today's update you can try a
preview version of the latest enhancements to MArcomage.
Most noticeable are
- completely new deck editor layout
- clear highlighting of ready decks and active games
- better dimensioned pages, look good on multiple resolutions
But there are also non-visible improvements, like xhtml validity and less bandwidth usage (due to cleaner html output).
Please try it out and let us know your opinion :)

Attention! Important!
In the upcoming update, html code of our website will be redesigned, restructured and optimized according to
W3C standards. We will be using advanced technology (for example CSS 2.0), so the site will no longer be compatible with archaic/unsupported browsers like Internet Explorer 6 and below. Those who use Internet Explorer 6, please install a supported browser like
Firefox or
Opera (both are free). If you are already 'Microsoft addicted', update to Internet explorer 7 if you must, but for your sake and for sake of mankind please abandon Internet Explorer. Microsoft is not making its browsers according to W3C standars, even with IE 7 you may experience difficulties. That is why we recommend Firefox for basic users and Opera for advanced users.

ad-hoc 'resource victory' balance change
Due to numerous complaints about game imbalance, resource victory conditions have been raised from 100 to 200 stock. This change applies immediately.

Most parts of the latest update have been applied today. The improvements include
- Timestamp support in the ingame chat box. Currently all times are shown as UTC (+0:00); personalized displaying will be added as soon as we have a mechanism to let people configure their profile.
- New victory types - 'Resource accumulation' and 'Timeout'. You can read about them in the game manual, which has been updated to reflect this change.
- Keywords in the deck editor's keyword filter will be alphabetically sorted, for easier searching.
- New-card indicators will now show on your cards as well, due to popular request.
- New cards and existing card adjustments, which were announced last week. You can find a quick overview in the 'Modified cards' section. The new cards are: Conjurer, Fire guardian, Temple of light, Tribes of east, Fallen knight, Lich, Heavy cavalry, Last hope, Battle formations, Wolf raiders, Beastmaster
Cards Conjurer, Fire guardian and Fallen knight were created by 'igniteice' with little modification by Mojko.

- Rarity change for Tax and Battering Ram. Decks that contained these cards have had them removed.
- Finally the possibility to quickly empty a deck, and also to quickly fill the deck with cards (chosen at random).
- Deck editor enhancement - filters - to help find the cards you want more quickly.

There have been some changes in the website part of MArcomage (as you may have noticed). But that's not all!
- The project's location was moved to http://arcomage.net/. Update your bookmarks if you didn't already do so.
- We now have a separate 'main' page that will hold basic information about our project. Every site should have one :P
- The official #arcomage channel has been created and registered on irc.freenode.org. Everybody's invited!
- A powerful wiki and bug tracking system is ready to be used at https://arcomage.net/trac. Try it yourself!

The latest round of updates is finished. New cards have been added, and many existing were updated. See the 'Modified cards' page for details. Also, a first version of chat is finally implemented. Feel free to send messages to your opponent (but don't forget that you're playing against a live person).
Note: Be sure to review the card modifications and rebuild all your decks. Using the old, unadjusted deck layouts to play will most likely result in game loss.
Note: If you were among those that played 'Time warp', please update your decks. The card has changed rarity and decks that played it had to have it removed.

We are proud to announce that a new version of Marcomage is almost finished.
The following is a list of upcoming features (some you can already try out):
- New login page. It has a better look (nice new pictures) and has now three subsections. You can access these three subsections without beeing logged in. But they are also accessible also when you are logged in, of course. In "Latest news" subsection you can read about the latest news concerning the game (new cards added, bugs fixed, features added, card modified). "Help" subsection will provide a game manual and also some game hints. "Modified cards" subsection will be a list of all changes concerning cards.
- In-game chat added. Players can now communicate with each other in game. Under the opponents cards, chat is located. After typing the message, you can send it by clicking on the "send" button or ALT + ENTER as a shortcut. Warning! When you hit only the ENTER key you will end in "challenge section". Sorry for inconvenience.
- "New card" banner added. It indicates last received card(s) in opponent hand. Banner is located above the card, which was received by your opponent in previous turn. When opponent played more than one time because of the "Play again" feature, all cards he received in those turns will be marked with the banner.
- Anti flooding function updated. Flooding - when one card is in your hand multiple times and keeps coming.
- Last played card window modified. It now shows more than one card when opponent played more than one card due to "Play again" feature of some card(s). If more cards are displayed, they are ordered from left to right. On the left is the last played card, on the right is the first played card.
- Player list now divides players into four groups - online active, offline active, not interested (inactive for more than a week) and dead (someone who is not playing anymore, inactive for more than three weeks). Each group has different color - green, red, dark red and grey.
- You can now leave a game with dead player without ruining your score. If this is the case instead of the "surrender" button a "leave" button is displayed. When you press it, you will leave the game, but your score remains unchanged.
- Game interface modified to look more consistent. "interface jumps" when displaying messages were removed. Also when using internet explorer scrollbar is always displayed, even when its not needed.
- Challenge system modified for the sake of optimalization. Users have to first select a user and then they can choose the deck with wich they want to play. These two steps were done in the same time.
- 113 cards modified. These card were unplayable, so nobody played them (these cards had high cost, a very weak effect, or both). So after many days spent on making the balance changes, these cards were modified so that they could be used in play. Also some cards are totally reworked so have a look at the "Modified cards" subsection.
- 15 new cards added. Mage guild, School of Nature magic, School of Restoration, Stone golem, Undead raid, Academy of Destruction, Academy of Illusion, Banshee, Beastiary, Iron Golem, Vampire countess, Centaur trainer, Mana burn, Necropolis, Wall shift
Report any problems you encounter. Also you can help us by sending ideas what features should we add or modify (ideas for new cards and card images are also welcome).
