It works when enemy discard your undead cards from your hand.
So say someone used Cleansing that discard 4 undead cards from your hand, and you play Afterlife in your turn you will get those 4 cards back and do the damage.

Recently discarded card = cards discarded by you last turn + cards discarded by you last turn(s) with some card(s) effect + cards discarded by opponent in his last turn(s) with some card(s) effect. Turn(s) means that you used swift or quick cards. The other thing player miss is that he replaces only non-undead cards. So, if you don't have a free slot (i.e. a non-undead card) the effect doesn't happen. So for example if Emissary would return 4 cards, but you have only 3 non-undead cards in hand he will return only 3 undead cards.

Now I wonder what the history module will do to this. it normally refers to the turn(s) before the most recent opponent turn(s). But what if you for example play Militia on a undead card, before playing the Emissary but in the same row of turn(s). Without the history module the Emissary will bring the undead back from your current turn(s) (I think). But with the module... Only last turn, last and current, or..?
Mojko on 21:38, 6. Jul, 2008
Game history module will have no effect on Emissary of the afterlife. Why should it? This module will allow the game to access all game information (from the very beggining). I see no reason why should it effect this card.
Progressor on 13:53, 8. Jul, 2008
The card sais 'recently discarded undead cards' and currently it goes to last turn, ignoring more récently discarded undead. I just wundered how this was.

BTW, without the history module, the system only remember the last effect. Master of the past has such a problem. If you play a series of swift/quick cards -> Master of the past, master of the past will revert the effect done on your swift/quick card (instead of enemy's). It's because it only remember the last effect on your wall/tower/stock. It can't revert what the enemy did on you. Be careful! I lost a game once because I played a quick card before Master of the Past. :"(

This is another card that should be lowered in cost. It's effect, while arguably semi-strong, is too conditional for it to be played (and it's not according to the statistics). Either the damage should be increased (or maybe a stock penalty imposed on your opponent) or the cost should be lowered.

Another option would be to prevent the return of the Undead cards to your hand. While I realize that this goes against the "nature" of the Undead, a lot of times you don't want the old cards you just got rid of.
Progressor on 22:56, 9. Jul, 2010
To prevent the return would also probably make this card worse (no Eternal guardian after the Behemoth / Auxillia -- Emmisary combo).

Further, the reason this card scores low on statistics is because of the condition. Your deck should contain some cards making for a good # of Undead for the combo, which is hard (which makes it played less often), but...
It's worth it!

After playing with this card a bit, I've found it a lot of fun. However, I would suggest another change. Instead of putting the cards back to random positions, it could put back the cards in non-rare, non-undead positions with the highest rarity discarded cards preferred.
Fithz Hood on 21:22, 6. Oct, 2010
It didn't work here
as you see in the discard pile there were 9 undead cards. in turn 29 I used emissary of the afterlife but it didn't worked at all
is it because there were more than 8 undead cards?
or could it be a mess caused by whirlwind played in the previous turn?
Mojko on 07:00, 7. Oct, 2010
What do you mean it didn't work? When you played Emissary of the afterlife you had 6 Undead cards in discard pile, so it returned these cards to your hand and did 60 damage.
Fithz Hood on 07:29, 7. Oct, 2010
that was turn 27, I'm talking about the second time I used it, in turn 29.
Mojko on 07:53, 7. Oct, 2010
The second time, something improbable happened - the Emissary of the afterlife returned cards to positions in hand, where they already were (notice that your hand didn't change at all after playing the second Emissary of the afterlife).

This is because:

1 - this is the second time you are returning your cards from discard pile to your hand (this action doesn't remove cards from discard pile, because discard pile actually doesn't exist (at least not in a form you would expect))

2 - positions are chosen at random, so it can happen that the positions are chosen same as the first time (in my test I wasn't that lucky - when I recreated the situation, I was able to do damage with the second Emissary of the afterlife).
Fithz Hood on 08:06, 7. Oct, 2010
so you are saying that there was a redraw identical to the first one?
It doesn't seem so: in turn 29 I had 2 ghouls, but in the turn28's discard pile there was only one ghoul. in that situation a redraw should discard my hand and replace it with the discarded card, so why there is a second ghoul? (the normal draw action gave me a lich)
Mojko on 08:19, 7. Oct, 2010
No, I'm saying that second time you played Emissary of the afterlife, the cards from discard pile were placed in your hand the same way as they were before you played it (for example Flesh golem was placed on top of Flesh golem). Your hand didn't change from the system point of view.
Fithz Hood on 08:44, 7. Oct, 2010
But how many cards I have redrawed? 7?
all the cards in the discard pile are considered recentely discarded?
Mojko on 08:47, 7. Oct, 2010
I'm unable to get this information, since your hand nor discard pile didn't change at all.
Fithz Hood on 09:07, 7. Oct, 2010
I was looking at the code of the card, could you explain what exactly is the variable $discarded_cards[0] ?
and why didn't you use $mydata->DisCards[0] instead of that variable?
Mojko on 09:25, 7. Oct, 2010
It's an alias, so it's the same.
