This may seem weird for someone with no hand or economic gain to suggest it, but why doesn't this site have any ads?
Now don't get me wrong, I'd be pissed the hell off if there were big animated ads (especially pop-up or with sound), but what about those tiny banners with just plain black&white text?

I think credit should be given where credit is due.
This is a great site, and I'm sure a little google-ad banner at the top wouldn't be a problem for anyone.
I don't know the traffic of this site, or how much revenue one gets from those little google-ad banners, but my guess is that it's better than nothing?

This could probably cover the costs of running the site, and reward the men who've made this all possible.
If the ad-revenue greatly covers the costs, it might help expand the site in ways, such as maybe having a cash-prize tournament?
The sky's the limit! (or well, N-cost of running the site, where N = ad-revenue)

The only potential problem I see here is a legal one, where 3DO might mind profit for this site?

We plan to add some ads to this site, but currently first, we want to change the button-oriented engine to link-oriented engine, since currently Googlebot is unable to see anything else than our main page.

Also, we will probably add an option to make a donation for our site.

Yeah I assumed that'd be an issue. An interesting way to get more for less is to have the ads refresh the same way as done here (when you hit refresh) http://www.dota-league.com/?section=instant/instant_single_game

Technologically we are ready to add donations and google ads. I've been discussing this with umage and he informed me that maintenance costs are fortunately low, so we are not in dire need of funds right now.

I've read about Google AdSense and it seems our impressions ratio is too low right now. We need to increase our player base first. If we were to add google ads to our site, they would be located right and/or below of the site content (no popups, display only). As a user, how would you feel about adding the google ads in this way to this site?

Frankly, I don't like Internet ads, but I wouldn't be bothered by it if it appeared in the site. You are the one paying to keep it going, and if it means having ads on the site to keep it working, then I guess that's what should be done. I would prefer to donate though, rather than watch ads

I'm a dirty adblock user, so it wouldn't really affect me. :x

I would definitely support the decision though.

I would be in favor of contextual ads appearing on site, such as those served by Google. I'd appreciate it if they were text ads only, however.
