Just now, I attempted to play Lich from my sixth slot to discard my opponent's fourth slot card. Instead, it played my fifth slot card. I am absolutely certain that I did not misclick as I had to use the dropdown menu to select the number four and then pressed Play beside it. Why did this happen?

I just tested the card and checked the code - I see no error there.

I've never had a problem with it before, either. It really confused me.

Maybe extra info would help the testing? Which card was your fifth card? Which card you tried to discard from opponent hand on their fourth slot?

I was attempting to discard Architectural improvement. Instead, Saints-day was played. On my next turn, I successfully discarded Architectural improvement as previously attempted. That's all I can recall for certain.

I don't know. I want to say I may have clicked the wrong card, except that I used the drop-down menu and know that it was the button beside it that I pressed. I wouldn't have selected the number and then floated over to an entirely different card.
