Finished playing Aliens: Colonial marines. The game is only 7 hours long :( I played on hardened difficulty and the game is still very easy. The main problem is that there is almost always at least one AI marine with you, which has unlimited ammo and is immortal. I was expecting that friendly marines tag alongs would be limited like in Half-life: Opposing force, but this is ridiculous. They could at least make it so that when AI marine's health is depleted, he is KO and stays KO until the area is clear and he can be revived.

Another thing is the ammo drop system. Unlike in other games where enemies have fixed or partially fixed drop, here the enemies will drop you the type of ammo you need the most, regardless of enemy type. This sounds cool at first, but if you think about it, it basically emulates the infamous 'universal' ammo presented in Dues Ex 2. You have quite the weapon arsenal, but you really have no motivation to use other weapons. I personally would use pump shotgun for close range, pulse rifle for mid range and battle rifle for long range. All other weapons are unnecessary.

Speaking of battle rifle - it's basically a sniper rifle that was in the Half-life: Opposing force - headshot = instant kill, 2 hits on non critical body parts = kill. This weapons was balanced, because in Half-life: Opposing force you could carry 15 sniper ammo at maximum and it was quite rare to find. Here, once you unlock battle rifle you can use it all the time. With some practice and upgrades, you can use it for medium range as well, which makes the pulse rifle obsolete.

The majority of the game you will be fighting mercenaries, not aliens. Mercenaries AI is quite good, however, once you gain the battle rifle, they will just die, because they have only mid range weapons - mercenaries have no snipers and therefore have no answer to your battle rifle. AI marines makes this even worse, since you can't control them - they will always go ahead to meet the enemy, and because they are immortal this makes them perfect tanks. You can sit behind them and shoot your enemies from long range.

Not helping is the mouse move system, because the game was developed for console as well. This is most notable on medium range weapons. When aiming at medium range target without a scope and moving your mouse one pixel, the cursor will move about 8 to 10 pixels. This makes smooth aiming impossible and therefore, you are encouraged to use the battle rifle even more.

Regarding the story (no spoilers), I really feel bad fighting humans, when there is a major alien infestation present, also the game story is not finished after the game, also due to the fact, that there are 4 DLCs planned this year. Game story feels more like a pilot film to a TV series.

Despite it's flaws (which are mainly cause by the casualisation of the game market, not flawed development) the game is better than critics claim and I recommend to play it, if you are Aliens 2 movie fan. The game story is a canon and a sequel to the Aliens 2 movie.

I've finished dead space 3 two or three days ago. Great game, recommend to everyone. There are criticisms of day one dlc, but it's absolutely useless in game and no one forces you to buy it.

For Diablo franchise fans I recommend playing Path of Exile. The game is and always will be free to play. Also, premium content will always be non-gameplay oriented (such as skins), therefore both paying and non-paying users are equal in game.

If someone starts playing and wants to trade something, send me a private message ;-)

I'd like to try it but the 5 giga installation is too much for my connection

I've tried it today for some 5-6 hours. It's surprisingly good, and skill combinations are limitless, passive skill tree is a beast. There was 2 consequential server drops. Another annoying thing is when location resets, map resets too, and worst of all - landscape orientation changes too, to fuck with your head. Also locations are quite small and linear, at least at start.

I've been playing a lot of Skyrim lately, and I am satisfied with this.

Same thing. :) Although I still don't have Dragonborn, didn't touch Dawnguard and basically just hanging around Whiterun for 35 hours.

Yeah, locations reset after 8 to 15 minutes if they are left alone. Location size dramatically increases with game progression. But not only in map size, but also in number of levels it has.

I've been playing a decent amount of Dead Space 3. Overall the game is entertaining - the weapon customization system is awesome, but the story-line is a little weak. That being said, if you liked the first two, you'll like this one.

Best weapon in DS3 is:
elite heavy frame
upper: telemetry spike + difraction torus = chaingun with at least 80 ammo
lower: plasma with default tip for knockback
electric ammo attachment can endlessly knockback enemies, unlike the acid or fire ones
another attachment - ammo or dmg
circuits dmg for chaingun and ammo and reload for plasma

i've made it early ingame, and other weapons i took along were lot worse, although still fun

another fun gun is dual rocket launcher with reload +++++ and explosion amplifier and explosion shield
dual saw is also nice but a bit weak and too situational

I personally prefer the elite heavy frame with two military engines - top direct ejection field (creates a carbine) and bottom conic disperal (creates a shotgun). It doesn't matter which "effect" you take because if you just throw in a few damage/clip/rate of fire chips, nothing gets close enough.

I beat it already on the hard mode (don't play it on an easier difficulty or it's too easy) and am currently playing it on impossible with a friend. Co-op is MUCH more fun than single player.

Damalycus wrote:

I use safety guard (explosion shield) and ammo box. So you get your clip without reloading. I also use the cryo pneumatic torch - it's SO good against some of the later big baddies. I had used the chain gun with acid earlier though, as it really helps against the swarming dudes.

Damalycus wrote:

Don't bother with dueling the saws. If you use the default tip, you can have it spinning in front of you while you fire your other barrel. I've been wanting to try the saw with an electrocution module, plus a stasis attachment - super slowing saw.

Happy hunting!

Waiting for Might & Magic X to be announced and hoping it will live up to expectations.

Lately, I've been playing Fire Emblem Awakening on 3DS. Never played a Fire Emblem game before. I always expected it to be like a fantasy version of Advance Wars, but it's all character-driven with every unit being an individual with his or her own story. It's immediately become the only thing I want to play, though I'll probably take my weekly Skyrim break later today.

Ah, I envy you so much. here in europe Fire emblem will be out on April, I don't know why it's so late. This one seems to be the best Fire emblem ever, I can't wait to play it.
In the meantime I'm playing Castlevania for 3ds and I'm waiting for Luigis mansion.

Finished Bioshock: Infinite. It's a really good game, very interesting characters and story. However, some of the core mechanics from the original Bioshock were abandoned for the sake of game simplicity. Most notable are:

- can't save game when you want, game is saved automatically and only at checkpoints

- two weapon loadout, sadly sidearms are included. This basically means that you won't be carrying special weapons with you and every boos fight you will be running around the boss arena to find special weapons suitable to deal with boss (the game is balanced around that)

- no research

- no security cameras (I don't count one level cameo)

- no security codes (I don't count the one cameo)

- can't carry medkits or psi hypos with you

Despite this, I highly recommend it :)

I pick up and put down games so often I never get around to finishing anything these days. Here is what I've been playing recently.

Skyrim - I think I have over 100 hours in this game and I have barely started the main quest.
Legend of Grimrock - A great dungeon crawler RPG with some challenging puzzles. I got maybe halfway through before stopping.
Witcher 2 - It looks like a nice game but for some reason I have not been drawn into it. I barely got past the introduction.
Bioshock - Despite not being fond of scary things or shooters I still had a lot of fun with this game. I got maybe halfway through before stopping.
Civilization V - I really am not sure why this game is so addicting but playing it requires so little of my attention that I can do other things at the same time like watch movies or listen to audio books.
Path of Exile - I keep making new characters so I haven't even beaten the game on the easiest difficulty yet. The character design aspect and the sphere grid are more interesting to play than the actual game. I think I'm done with it now.
Dragon Warrior 4 - I play a lot of older console games and I am particularly fond of the Dragon Warrior series. This is the one I was playing most recently.

I'll keep an eye out for Steam's next big sale. If they have XCOM, Dishounored or Farcry 3 for a good price I might get one of those.

Started playing new game - Dark. It's a third person sneaker with a vampire setting. Sounds good? Well it isn't and here is why:

It's my first sneaker game where you actually can't avoid killing enemies, you get the most skill points when you silently kill an enemy. This is rather limiting, because sneaker games usually gives you three choices: confrontation, non-lethal and evasion approach and all three are roughly balanced. Well, not in this case - you get 80 skill points for silent kill, 20 - 40 for kill and 0 for evasion.

The game is too easy. You start with skill such as instant kill, x-ray vision (also through walls), spotting meter (shows you how good the enemy sees you) and short range teleportation. I mean what more you need for a sneaker? I spent only few points in improving these basic skills and that's it. More skills would break the game.

The whole vampire setting is almost completely unused. I thought that they will exploit some light-shadow mechanic, because the light hurts vampires obviously, but no.

The story and characters are trash, especially characters. Right at the start you are introduced to some friendly vampires that are located in your base of operations. Each has some special abilities, let me list them:

- one is bartender and can prepare drinks with super speed
- one is a head of security and uses his x-ray vision (this ones actually makes sense)
- one is a DJ (what the hell?)
- the boss is a vampire that gained hacking skills from vampirism (never heard that one before)

If this was a parody game, I would be totally ok with it, but the game takes itself seriously. The only saving grace is that the player character is voiced by the same guy who made the voice of Geralt from Witcher.

Summary:

It's like the Dishonored game, but without good story, good characters, choice of game approach and extremely easy. Don't waste your time on this game.
