I think it would be interesting to have the possibility to create cards with counters like good old thallid
Maybe it's not easy to implement, but it shoulden't take many space on cards, just a little box like this.

Tokens are already similar to counters, but I do like the idea.

yes, tokens are like global counters.
but imagine cards like this:

common
5bricks
durable
mode1: put a counter on this card (max 8)
mode2: tower + #counters

or

uncommon
6r
enduring(5)
if there is acounter on this card next card will be this card
mode1: put a counter on this card
mode2: attack 8, remove a counter from this card

I mean: funny isn't it?

Oh, I like the idea, don't get me wrong.

However, by doing this, we're moving more into MTG territory, which I'm not sure is the way to go.

On a side note, I think global "enchantments" would be interesting as well (Although I guess that is similar to the deities idea...).

I think both of those (tokens and enchantments) are neat ideas. Marcomage will never be as complex as Magic, because, for example, it just doesn't make sense to have "interrupts" in an asychronous game like this. I don't think it could hurt to add a bit more flexibility to cards though.
