I like the change a while ago where cards discarded by commons can't draw rares, but I think rares that discard your enemy's cards shouldn't allow them to draw rares. It would be a good balance (like we did to Evolution already).

On the flip side of that issue, Mediator seems out of balance in that an uncommon zero cost card can remove a rare zero cost card like Prosperity from the enemy's hand without any cost to the player nor any offsetting benefit to the enemy.
Progressor on 13:12, 14. Aug, 2010
It doesn't have much to do with jbryant3's issue, but I don't think that makes mediator imballanced since at the same time it's ridiculously expensive to discard, for example, Orc Regiment. (Compared to Intrigue with a fixed cost.)

I hated that change to common cards, and I would hate the proposed change as well. If it's necessary for the sake of balance, then just include it explicitly in the card's text. I don't like having weird, hidden rules that aren't obvious by looking at the card text alone.

I totally agree with Progressor.

@dindon: I don't think this would be a "hidden" rule. If this were the standard, everyone would learn it because it would be placed within the game manual (or they would learn first hand within the game). This would not only promote commonality between all cards, but it would benefit the tiered structure of common-uncommon-rare.
Progressor on 14:29, 15. Aug, 2010
I afree with Dindon that you shouldn't have to find this out by accident or in depth research of the manual. Placing it on the cards in full text is too clogging, though.

I suggest adding a * on all common discard cards (behind the word discard in the card text) that would display the rule on mouse-over, just as the keywords.
jbryant3 on 18:29, 15. Aug, 2010
Or just allow the "discard" text to have a mouse-over

I don't think an extra 4 words is too clogging. Unless we really want to add this effect to every rare discarding card. But why? Is every rare discarding card underpowered? Cards should be balanced on a case by case basis, and there are many more ways to balance an underpowered card.

@jbryant: The game manual is a mess. I doubt that many, especially among new players, would have the patience to read through it in full.
Progressor on 20:35, 15. Aug, 2010
I thought it to be more about adding the information to discard-commons that they can't draw rare. If you look at some of those commons it fits, yes, but for the more wordy ones it would be to much.

Well it's an interesting concept. Because it's really annoying to discard a card only to give your opponent a better card.

If I may on the commons discarding your own cards and not being able to get rares after: I never liked that. Like in Magic: The Gathering you could have a few cards that discarded a card and let you draw another, this was a good way to cycle through the deck for the type of cards you needed at the moment, and made it possible for very interesting strategies.

I'd like to revisit this issue since the cards have been changed quite a bit since my original post.

What if we set the discard mechanic to be generally that a card drawn after a discarded card can't be of a higher rarity than the discarded card? Then, we can change this default rule, like we do on Evolution and Giant, without worrying about Dark templar.

Just a thought ;)
